The farm that stayed small
A few years ago I stood in my backyard holding a single, perfectly ripe blueberry. It was warm from the sun, dusted with that soft white bloom — and when I tasted it, the flavor was nothing like the grocery store.
That moment is why Graywood Meadows exists.
Since 2014 we have grown highbush blueberries on less than one acre at our home on Elmcrest Rise in West Henrietta, New York — about twelve varieties, no sprays, no shortcuts. Every berry is hand-picked at peak ripeness and available for pickup at our farmstand. We do not ship.
Blueberries are not difficult plants. They are simply extremely particular about the soil beneath their roots. Get that one condition right, and the bushes become generous, long-lived, and almost easy.
Years 1–2
Roots first. Soil and steady water.
Years 3–4
First real harvests.

Mature, generous plants — good care can reward you for 20–30 years or more.
How we grow
The conditions blueberries love
Acidic soil
Acidic soil (about pH 4.5–5.5), tested and amended.
Drainage & organic matter
Good drainage and plenty of organic matter.

No synthetic sprays, ever
Pests are managed with hedgerow habitat, netting and hand-scouting. Nothing synthetic touches the fruit or the soil.
Compost-built beds
Beds are top-dressed each autumn with compost made from our own prunings, leaf litter and orchard mulch.
Hand-harvest only
Every berry is picked by hand at sunrise. No mechanical shakers, no ethylene, no cold-store ripening.
Steady moisture
Steady moisture and deep mulch keep the roots healthy through the season.
